POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Group Fitness Instructors facilitate group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels; effectively building community within the class and modifying class as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
2. Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being.
3. Maintains working knowledge of branch and wellness trends to provide effective information and support to members.
4. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helping members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
5. Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
6. Celebrates achievement of program participants related to program or personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and well-being.
7. Keeps accurate class attendance records.
8. On time for scheduled classes.
9. Actively participates in department and branch staff meetings and/or related trainings.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must hold current nationally recognized Group Fitness certification from approved organization
• Ability to communicate verbally to large and small groups of members and the ability to work with varying fitness levels and ages
• Ability to work independently with attention to detail required
• Complete before first shift: YMCA cause & culture training; fitness-specific training
• Complete within 30 days of hire: Child Abuse Prevention Training; CPR/AED; First Aid (provided by YMCA)
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community and successful clearance of background check

• Gym/Fitness Studio environment, must be able to stand for extended periods of time, walk, and bend over, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull and move, lift and/ or carry up to 15 pounds repeatedly, at or above waist height. They must also be able to perform a variety of exercises with proper form and correct client/member’s form confidently and professionally.
